이중주어 구문의 한영번역유형 연구

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article deals with so-called double subject constructions in Korean, which have been one of the main concerns in Korean linguistics. Unlike other studies, this study focuses on English translations of these constructions. Having more than one subject may cause problems in English translation of these constructions, since there should be only one subject in a sentence in English. In our study, 50 frequently-cited double subject constructions are translated into English by multiple translators in an unbiased way, allowing possible alternative translations. For 104 translated sentences, we compare and contrast them with original double subject constructions in Korean and finally categorize them into 5 types. Each type shows the various relationships between subjects and other elements in double subject constructions. This categorization can be a guideline for English translations of the constructions and also may shed lights on the nature of the construction itself. Since there are various relationships between elements, a single type of approach cannot account for the construction as a whole. Instead categorized approaches seem more desirable for the construction. The fact that the seemingly similar data are analyzed in several different ways shows that the construction itself is an example of superficial coincidence of various meaningful relationships underneath.
