It has been reported that demineralization, freeze drying and radiation sterilization of allogenic bone might improve the characteristics of allogenic bone. The purpose of this study is to know the usefulness of radiation resterilized allogenic bone. Aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were isolated by using aerobic and anaerobic blood agar plates and histopathologic effects were examined by implanting radiation sterilized allogenic bone into rabbit. In microbiologic study, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were not isolated from the radiation sterilized bone. In histopathologic study, the interstitial inflammatory cell infiltrate of the dura mater was more severe than that of chip bone and fascia lata. As time elapsed, the interstitial edema of dura mater was more severe. But interstitial edema of chip bone and fascia lata was constantly mild. The histiocyte infiltration and muscular destruction of resterilized dura mater was severe. The hemorrhage of radiation resterilized dura mater was mild and moderate. The interstitial fibrosis of chip bone, fascia lata and dura mater before two years was moderate, and that of dura mater after two years was trace.
These results suggested that radiation sterilization might be useful method, chip bone and fascia lata at one year after radiation resterilization might have good tissue reaction, relatively.
Further study is needed about immunological examination of radiation resterilized allogenic bone.
