국가폭력과 말 = State Violence and Words

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates the symbolic power of the state and the symbolic struggles against it regarding the Sewol ferry tragedy. Many words are spoken and written on the tragedy and the truth behind it. Whereas the words written by intellectuals and writers are accepted as legitimate, those of the families of victims are heard as “sound and fury” within the languge market as suggested by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence. However, this paper opposes Bourdieu’s argument that reduces the political struggles between orthodoxy and heterodoxy to the struggles among language commodities upon which different values and authorities are imposed. Words as voices open to the possibility of signification can transpass the boundaries of social orders and hierarchies according to Jacques Rancière. If not sophiscated and coherent as discourses, the words of victim families, cried out of sound and fury, resist the symbolic power of the state demanding the truth about the death of their families, which is inevitably interlocked with the public and historical investigation of the tragedy. In this sense, the victim families’ words demanding the truth can be regarded as a criticque within the politics of truth, which, according to Michel Foucault, is a will not to be governed by the state hiding its fundamental illegitimacy.
