This study investigates how dancesport in Korea has developed within the interplay of social discourse, institutional change, and cultural dynamics, using news archives as primary sources. The findings reveal that dancesport, once stigmatized as a “decadent social activity,” gradually secured legitimacy through legal reforms and the expansion of mass culture, eventually establishing itself as a lifestyle sport. While media coverage often reinforced negative stereotypes, it also promoted dancesport as a healthy leisure pursuit and a means of fostering community values, thereby facilitating shifts in public perception. International multi-sport events such as the Olympics and the Asian Games further highlighted both the potential and the limitations of dancesport’s recognition on the global stage, with its inclusion and exclusion reflecting broader issues of cost, popularity, and politics. This study argues that the evolution of dancesport cannot be reduced to institutional approval alone but must be understood as the outcome of intertwined social stigmas, cultural transformations, and international contexts. This study is significant for filling an academic gap in the history of dancesport and for highlighting its journey of overcoming social prejudice to become part of mainstream sports culture.
