'물'을 주제로 한 Maurice Ravel의 피아노 작품 연구

Of the piano works composed by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), one of the representative composers of impressionism, <Jeux d’eau (1901)>, <Miroirs (1905)> and <Gaspard de la nuit (1908)> are the most significant impressionistic piano works. It is realized that these three piano works of Ravel have some relations with the theme of ‘water’ such as <Jeux d’eau>, “Une barque sur l’oc&eacute;an”-the third piece of <Miroirs>, “Ondine”- the first piece of <Gaspard de la nuit>.
This thesis examines the historical background of the evolution of impressionistic music at the end of the 19th Century, the unique features of impressionistic music, and the Ravel's musical grammar and general tendency in his music. Also <Jeux d’eau>, “Une barque sur l’oc&eacute;an”, and “Ondine” are analyzed in terms of form, impressionistic melody, rhythm and harmony.
Finally, this thesis studies Ravel's characteristic compositional techniques used in the parts expressing various forms of water in order to help a performer find more effective and better interpretation of <Jeux d’eau>, “Une barque sur l’oc&eacute;an”, and “Ondine”.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

19세기 말 유럽의 여러 나라에서는 독일의 낭만주의에 대한 반동으로 새로운 예술의 흐름이 생겨나는데 프랑스에서는 인상주의(Impressionism)로 나타났다. 인상주의 음악의 대표적인 작곡가 중의 한 사람인 라벨(Maurice Joseph Ravel, 1875-1937)의 피아노 작품 중 인상주의가 가장 두드러지는 작품들은 <Jeux d’eau (물의 희롱), 1901>와 <Miroirs (거울), 1905>, 그리고 <Gaspard de la nuit (밤의 가스파르), 1908>이다. 이 작품들에는 모두 ‘물’이라는 주제로 작곡된 곡들이 포함되어 있다는 것을 발견하였는데, <Jeux d’eau>와 모음곡인 <Miroirs>중 세 번째 곡인 “Une barque sur l’oc&eacute;an (대양 위의 조각배)”와 모음곡 <Gaspard de la nuit>중 첫번째 곡인 “Ondine (물의 요정)”이다.
본 논문에서는 19세기 말 인상주의 음악이 발생하게 된 시대적 배경과 라벨의 음악어법 그리고, 작품경향을 알아보고 ‘물’이라는 공통의 주제를 사용한 <Jeux d’eau>와 “Une barque sur l’oc&eacute;an”과 “Ondine”을 형식, 조성, 화성, 선율, 리듬을 토대로 분석, 연구하였다.
이와 같은 연구를 통하여 고전적이면서도 인상주의적인 작곡가 라벨에 대한 이해를 가지고 ‘물’을 주제로 한 세 작품을 통하여 라벨이 물을 어떻게 묘사하며 표현하였는지를 살펴보아 연주자들이 각 곡마다 보다나은 해석을 찾는데 도움이 되고자 한다.
