This study aims at viewing the origin, transition and uses of Sangmo decorated with red, thin feathers, based on old books. It can be concluded that Sangmo had been used for the military purpose, being found among the military articles including Jenrip(felt-het), Tugu(helmet), saddle, flag, spear and Mo.
Sangmo came from ‘feather ornament’ and was developed into the round form of red feathers. Therefore it Has the same meaning with Sakmo-feathers with which a spear was decorated.
There are two opinions about the origin and transition of the term, Sangmo. The one is that the original was Sakmo but has changed into Sangmo owing to pronunciation-related problems. The other is that Sangme has been changed into the form similar to Sakmo, a round-typed feather ornament with which a spear was decorated.
Sangmo had been used for decorating Jenrip, Tugu, horse ornaments, flag, spear, Mo and the hat of a farmer's folk band all through Chosun-Dynasty and recorded only as one of the importing articles from China in the Chosun-wangjo Shil-rok
Especially Sangmo was included among the list of presents which Chinese messengers brought for Chosun dynasty kings. and Chosun dynasty also brought for Japanese kings.
During Chosun-dynasty Sangmo had a great importance as military signals, mere decorations and one of importing articles as well as presenting ones.
Each Sangmo didn't have a specific figure and usage. However, it had been changed into the form of a special play-Sangmo Dolrigi being used as a hat of a farmer's folk band. It was also used in order to show off the motional beauty when players were spinning their heads in the instrumental music of peasants.
