This paper examined the objectives, principles, and evaluation tools for learning of self-enhancement through the literature review of the theories related to self-concept changes. Five objectives of self-enhancement were established: (1)the search for meaning for living and being of self, (2)self-understanding, self-acceptance, and self-disclosure, (3)self-esteem, (4)inner responsibility, and (5)acceptance and regard of others.
Some of the counseling processes and methods empathized by counseling theories of client-centered therapy, logotherapy, rational-emotive therapy, and behavioral approach suggested for the learning principles for self-enhancement. The observational learning and self-regulation of social learning theory and attribution theory also presented much implications for learning of self-enhancement.
The Korean version of POI(Personal Orientation Inventory), Crumbaugh's PIL(Purpose-In- Life Test), ego-identity scale, self-worth scale, Korean version of IBT(Irrational Belief Test), the scale for attribution of one's successes and failures, and the unstructured who-am-I questionnaire are available for the evaluation of self-enhancement objectives.
