비르투 로마나(Virtù romana)를 중심으로 본 마키아벨리의 공화주의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 마키아벨리가 자신의 시대의 위기를 극복하기 위해 모범으로 삼은 로마 공화정의 힘과 위대함의 정수로서 비르투 로마나(virtu romana)에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 자유와 공공선의 정신이 핵심인 자유 정체 속에서 로마인들은 경쟁하고 대립하는 정치세력들의 힘들을 모아낼 수 있었다. 그들의 정치적 대결을 유혈투쟁으로서가 아니라 말과 제도를 통해 해결하고, 그들을 통합으로 이끌어 낼 수 있었던 것은 로마인들의 정치 영역에서 혈연, 가문, 재산 같은 사적 수단을 통해 명예와 권력에 이르는 길이 차단되어 있었기 때문이다. 오로지 능력과 재능(virtu)만을 통해 공직과 명예에 이르는 공적인 길과 제도를 열어놓음으로써 ‘타락’의 도래를 저지할 수 있었으며 나아가 자유와 공공선을 우선시 하는 분위기 속에서 정치 공동체 각 구성원의 힘을 모아낼 수 있었던 것이다. 이렇게 자유와 공공선이 보장되도록 하는 능력 위주의 정치풍토 하에서 정치 공동체의 구성원들은 부패하지 않고 그들의 힘을 모아내어 위대한 힘을 발휘할 수 있었던 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reviews the republican thought of Niccolo Machiavelli by investigating the concept of virtu romana. For Machiavelli, Virtu romana was the essence of power, greatness of ancient Romans, and a model for overcoming crisis in his (Machiavelli's) own time. With the constitution in which the spirit of liberty and common good were combined, Romans could bring together competing and conflicting political powers. They could solve political conflicts, not by bloody combat on the street, but by the words and institutions, making sure that the private way to the political honour and power was prohibited. virtu, conceived as the pure ability unassisted by family background and other private means was the only legitimate way to acquire honour and power. Such a public way, with the help of corresponding institutions, prevented corruption. This republican atmosphere kept the inhabitants of the political community from corruption, and promoted their participation and aggregated the powers from every part of whole community.
Virtu romana as the power and essence of the Roman republic relied on the existence of a fair-playing political ground, in which the idea of liberty and common good could stand on.
