근대의 위기와 헤겔의 정치철학

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서 나는 헤겔이 고대와 근대의 논쟁, 즉 고대적 자유와 근대적 자유 사이의 논쟁을 어떤 방식으로 수용하면서 비판적으로 종합하고 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이런 문제의식을 구체적으로 실현하기 위해 나는 우선 헤겔의 정치철학의 중요성을 근대의 위기의 근원에 대한 그의 진단이 무엇이었는지를 고대적 자유와 근대적 자유의 대립의 극적 표출로 이해되는 루소의 경우를 통해서 설명하고 나서(Ⅰ), 루소가 대변하고 있는 고대적 민주주의론에 대한 헤겔의 비판을 살펴본다(Ⅱ). 마지막으로 나는 주체성의 원리를 긍정하고 있는 근대적인 조건 속에서 인간의 자유를 가장 적합하고 안정적으로 실현할 수 있다고 제시된 헤겔의 이성적인 국가이론의 몇 가지 측면들을 설명하면서 그가 고대적 자유관을 어떤 방식으로 근대의 조건 속에서 되살리고 있는지를 살펴보기로 한다(Ⅲ). 이런 과정에서 루소에 대한 헤겔의 비판이 단순하게 자유주의적 근대에 대한 변호에 그치는 것이 아니라 고대와 근대의 이원적 대립을 넘어선 고대와 근대의 종합을 향하고 있다는 점이 자연스럽게 드러날 것이다.

In this article I will argue that the greatness and originality of Hegel's political philosophy lies in overcoming the antithesis between the liberties of the ancients and the liberties of the moderns, which Rousseau left unsolved.
Therefore the central aim of this article is to prove that Hegel succeeded in searching for an alternative and synthetic theory of freedom, which enables him to overcome the antithesis between civic virtues like patriotism and commerce or desire for money and reconcile the concept of classical democratic-republic freedom to the modern concept of freedom.
