Prunella vulgaris L. var. lilachina(Labiatae) is used as herbal remedies for infectious hepatities, cancer, human tuberculosis, bacilliary dysentery. In order to investigate the efficacy of the plant in vitro and in vivo, its fractions were examined antilipid peroxidative activity and therapeutic effect of carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in rats. In liver lipid, the lipid peroxidative activity was inhibited significantly by ether and butanol fractions in vitro, also in butanol fraction in vivo (p>0.001). In serum, the antilipid peroxidative activity was increased significantly in chloroform fraction in vivo. Butanol fraction had significantly reduced the elevated level of S-GOT and S-GPT(p<0.001). The liver and lipid weights of CCl_4 administration group tend to increase compared with those of normal group. The administration of each fraction P.O. after CCl_4, S.C., lipid weight tend to reduce, but not significant.
