원동운동대회 창설 배경과 W. Cameron Forbes의 역할론 = A Study on the Background of the Far Eastern Championship Games Establishment and the Role of Forbes

The purpose of this study is to examine the background of the establishment of the Far Eastern Championship Games, the predecessor of the Asian Games today and the first officially certified regional Olympics in the IOC, and the role of W. C. Forbes. As a result, the following results were obtained. First, the origin of the Manila Carnival meets was the military shooting event that began in 1906 at the soldiers' carnival. Second, the Manila Carnival Sports Competition was developed into an oriental Olympia competition in 1913. Third, Forbes was a professional sportsman from Harvard University who founded the Manila Polo Association and the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation(PAAF). Fourth, the Oriental Olympia competition, the predecessor of the FEOGs, was organized and developed into the FECGs. Fifth, Forbes led the creation of the Far Eastern Olympic Association(FEOA) Preparation Committee, which created the FECGs. Finally, as discussed above, Forbes was a leading originator in the foundation of the FECGs.

본연구는 오늘날 아시안게임의 전신이자 IOC 최초의 공식 인증 지역올림픽인 원동운동대회의 창설 배경과 W. C. Forbes의 역할에 관하여 살펴보았다. 그결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 마닐라 카니발 운동경기의 기원은 1906년 군인들의 카니발에서 시작된 군대대항 사격경기였다. 둘째, 마닐라 카니발 운동경기대회는 동양올림피아(Oriental Olympia)경기를 거쳐 1913년 원동운동대회로 발전하였다. 셋째, 포브스는 하버드대학 미식축구 선수와 코치 출신의 전문체육인으로 마닐라폴로협회, 필리핀아마추어체육연맹(PAAF) 등을 설립한 체육행정가였다. 넷째, 그는 원동운동대회의 전신인 동양올림피아(Oriental Olympia) 경기를 조직하여 원동운동대회로 발전시켰다. 다섯째, 포브스는 원동운동대회 창설을 주도한 원동올림픽협회(FEOA) 준비위원회를 조직하고 원동운동대회 창설을 주도했다.이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 포브스는 원동운동대회 창설의 주도적 역할을 한 인물이었다.
