한국 체류 유럽권 교환학생의 전환학습 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구 = A Narrative Inquiry into Transformative Learning Experiences of European Exchange Students in South Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국 고등교육기관에서 단기 체류하고 있거나 체류 경험이 있는 유럽 출신 외국인 교환학생들의 자기 인식의 변화 및 성찰 경험을 내러티브 방법으로 탐구하여 향후 교환학생 프로그램의 질적 효과 제고에 기여하고자 한다. 기존의 국내 연구는주로 아시아 출신의 장기 체류 학생들을 대상으로 어학과 적응을 중심으로 다뤄왔으며, 단기 프로그램 참여자가 겪는 문화적 전이와 이로 인한 변화에 관한 논의가 현저히 부족하다. 본 연구는 2025년 10월부터 11월까지 유럽 출신 교환학생 여섯 명을 대상으로심층 면담을 실시하였고, 그들의 관계 형성, 문화적 접촉, 자기 인식의 변화와 같은 과정을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 교환학생들은 문화적 충돌을 경험하며 일상에 적응하였고, 이를 해석하고 재구성하며 낯선 환경 속에서 자신을 되돌아보며 삶의 방향성과 가치를재구성하는 경험을 하고 있었다. 이는 단기 교환학생 프로그램이 일회성의 체험 수준을 넘어 자기 인식의 변화와 성찰의 시발점이 될 수 있음을 시사하며, 향후 국제교류 프로그램의 질적 효과를 높이고, 유럽권 학생의 시선을 통해 한국 사회와 고등교육의 문화적 특성을 되짚음으로써 다문화 감수성을 제고하는 데 기여한다. 이는 단순 문화 교류를 넘어서 세계 시민성을 기르는 교육적 기반으로 작용할 수 있다.

This study explores the transformative learning experiences and reflective identity development of short-term European exchange students at higher education institutions in South Korea. While existing Korean research has focused largely on long-term Asian students and their linguistic adaptation, little attention has been paid to the cultural transition and internal change of short-term participants. Based on in-depth interviews with six European students conducted from October to November 2025, this study analyzes identity negotiation within relationship building, cultural encounters, and self-reflection. The findings indicate that students navigated cultural tensions, reconstructed their experiences, and reshaped values and life directions through reflection in unfamiliar contexts. These results suggest that short-term exchange programs can function as a meaningful site for identity transformation beyond temporary cultural exposure, while offering implications for enhancing multicultural sensitivity and the qualitative effectiveness of international exchange and global citizenship education.
