Purpose : The domestic construction equipment industry has been focusing on market diversification, primarily in regions with large-scale infrastructure and real estate investments. However, this has inevitably led to significant impacts on the construction market and project fluctuations in export regions. The recovery of the construction industry, driven by the US COVID-19 pandemic, is one factor contributing to the growing importance of the US market. Furthermore, demand for construction equipment is expected to increase following the passage of the KRW 1,300 trillion infrastructure bill in 2021. This study used the Market Competitive Advantage Index (MCA) to analyze the export competitiveness of the construction equipment industries in the US market in Korea, China, and Japan.
Research design, data, methodology : The analysis covered a 10-year period from 2013 to 2022. The HS Code product classification was based on trade statistics from the Korea Construction Equipment Industry Association and the Korea International Trade Association, and was based on the 6-digit HS Code. The analysis data was obtained from the UN Comtrade Database. The Market Comparative Advantage Index (MCA) is an index that determines the comparative advantage of exported products in a target country's market. The MCA indicates that a country is competitive when it exports at a higher rate than other countries, allowing for comparative analysis with other countries.
Results : Korean excavators have proven to be export-competitive in the US and Chinese markets, based on superior quality and competitive pricing. Therefore, active and sustained marketing efforts are necessary to expand market share. Furthermore, leveraging product quality and price competitiveness, Korean companies will need to aggressively pursue expansion into emerging markets.
Conclusions : Forklifts have emerged as a specialized export item in the US market, boasting a high market share and superior quality. However, the trade specialization index in the Chinese market indicates low export competitiveness. Therefore, as an alternative, we should actively pursue expansion into emerging markets such as India.
