This study analyzes the political and social gaze through which those Joseon nationals who were taken captive by the Japanese armies during the Hideyoshi Invasions (1592-1598) were looked at and identified. It also analyzes how these gazes were internalized by individual captives. In the aftermath of the war, Joseon developed an edification policy which emphasized the notion of honor (節義, jeolwui) and the concept of ``death`` in defense of such honor (殉節, sunjeol). Joseon established a hierarchal structure under which those who died without ever surrendering to the Japanese invaders were regarded as having a greater honor than those who were taken captive but remained alive. The highest status and dignity was granted to those who died in defense of their honor. As such, the perception of those who were taken as captive but later returned alive as servile individuals became widespread within society. In the aftermath of the Japanese invasions, Joseon made efforts to repatriate the captives. To this end, it dispatched royal envoys to Japan on five different occasions during the period that spanned from 1607 to 1643. However, the government`s policy of glorifying those who died in defense of honor and lionizing their efforts ensured that those who returned home alive did so damaged. On the other hand, the captives internalized extremely contrasting notions such as those of ``indomitable death`` and ``servile life``, and ``death as more valuable than life`` and ``life as less valuable than death.`` In particular, the captives who belonged to the sadaebu class did not regard their sacrifice and pain as being justification for their forgoing of honor (毁節, hwejeol). The honor (節義, jeolwui) of those who did not want to assimilate in Japan and lost their life trying to escape, of those who successfully escaped and made their way back to Joseon, and that of those who returned to Joseon late in conjunction with the government`s repatriation policy were not perceived as being equal, and this even amongst the captives. Yangban such as Gang Hang and Jeong Huideuk, who had thoroughly internalized the notions of righteousness and justification, viewed honor (節義, jeolwui) as the supreme value and moral duty of man, and as something which should not be damaged under any circumstances. Joseon society`s discrimination between those who died in defense of honor and those who were taken captive, and the sense of self-condemnation and guilty conscience possessed by the captives that was created by their internalization of these discriminative gazes defined the memories of these captives during late Joseon. As such, the Joseon homeland became another strange land to these living captives.
