영미 근대 초등교육 형성과정에서의 청교도 역할 연구

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how educational efforts of the Puritans concretely influenced on forming elementary education in England and New England. Puritanism is undoubtedly one of the most important factors shaping England and U.S.A. culture, and it gives rise to public discussion focusing on education. Especially American history and its culture can be thoroughly understood when we admit the properties of Puritanism. In this regard, it would be meaningful for us to review how the Puritanism has affected forming modern elementary education in England and U.S.A. Because the education for children was utmost concern to parents, Puritans made strong claims regarding the duties of parents to educate their children, and recognized more seriously the necessity of elementary education to solve, the problems of baptism. To increase piety for God, a long-term strategy is necessary and they should have the common school to educate their children. Puritanism of England have exerted profound influences on forming the basis of elementary education, and Puritans have established many public schools. Even if, behind the immigration of early Puritans to America, there were Bible-based thought, and they established higher education earlier than elementary education, they also developed the elementary education on the basis of equalitarianism, so the free and compulsory schooling rendered great service to the development of education of New England and today s elementary education. Thus Puritans educational contribution was to establish the basic system and values for elementary education. Key Words : England, U.S.A., Elementary Education, Puritan
