프랑스 내 아랍어 교육과 무슬림 이민자문제 = Arabic Language Education and Muslim Immigrants in Contemporary France

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서는 프랑스 내 아랍어 교육과 무슬림 이민자 사이의 관계를 고찰하였다. 프랑스 내 600만 명의 무슬림 이민자, 그 가운데 300-400만 명이 아랍어를 사용하고 있음에도 불구하고, 프랑스 학교에서 아랍어 채택률이 현저히 떨어지는 이유는 무엇인가?프랑스에서의 아랍어 교육은 그 기원이 오래며, 알제리가 식민지화됨에 따라 아랍어는 프랑스 내 하나의 지역어로서 취급되어왔다. 하지만 프랑스의 단일 언어정책과 20세기 후반 이후 프랑스어와 영어의 경쟁관계로 인하여 아랍어와 같은 소수어는 프랑스 학교에서 설 자리가 거의 없게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 프랑스 주류사회와의 갈등으로 인해 무슬림 이민자 2세들은 학교에서 아랍어를 채택하기 더욱 어려워진 상황에 처해있다. 즉 프랑스의 이민자정책이 학생들의 제2외국어 선택에 부정적 영향을 끼쳤다고 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

With emphasis on the reality of Arabic language education in secondary schools and the role of Muslim immigrants therein, this article examines the correlation between the population of Muslim immigrants and the reality of Arabic language education in contemporary France. The origin of Arabic language education in France can be traced back to the Medieval Age. With the colonization of Algeria in the 1830s, Arabic was generally regarded as one of the local languages of France. In the late twentieth century, however, the Arabic language gradually and significantly lost its position in France as a result of the French-Only policy, designed to protect France from the encroachment of the English language. In addition, a series of conflicts between mainstream French society and Muslim communities resulted in decreasing enrollment in Arabic classes, inhibiting secondary schools from offering such courses. In a sense, the demise of Arabic language education at the secondary school level can be understood as a byproduct of the strict immigration policy employed by the French government.(Sogang University)
