This article is to study a role of Joseph in structure of Jacob’s 'toledot' According to G. von Rad, Joseph story was a novella created by wisdom literature at early monarchy. He thought that Joseph was a model for courtier realizing wisdom literature. Also L. A Turner and R. Pirson tried to understand Joseph through Joseph's dream. But Joseph's wisdom not came from wisdom literature but came from God. God's providence in Jacob’s 'toledot' was not a accomplishment of Joseph's dream but settlement of Jacob family at Egypt. Therefore we have to other approach. So I argue that Genesis 37-50 is not the Joseph's story but Jacob's toledot. I present a structure of Jacob’s 'toledot' for a role of Joseph in it. With a strict rule, Jacob's 'toledot' is composed of total 6 acts and 16 scenes. Each act forms a symmetry structure with each other and accomplishes a unity of the structure and theme. Each scene is closely connected with each other and completes the main plot, which is the settlement of the family of Jacob in Egypt and solves subplot, which is the problem of land and descendants of the Covenant's theme. I investigate a role of Joseph in the structure of Jacob's 'toledot'. Joseph was a person who is to supply and take care of his brothers, as anticipated in Genesis 37:2c. He left the land of promise and prepared food and land at Goshen for Jacob's family in Egypt and supported them. He also delivered to his descendants the hope of the land of promise. I present a theological message concerning a role of Joseph in the structure of Jacob’s 'toledot'. In the context of Genesis, a role of Joseph and Juda was to accomplish Abraham's covenant in Genesis 15. According to this theological respect, Joseph was a man sent to Egpyt for accomplishing of God's covenant that Abraham's seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs. Joseph prepared food and land at Goshen for Jacob's family in Egypt, and Juda leaded Jacob family to the land prepared by Joseph. So a role of Joseph and Juda did not divide each other but a inseparable harmony. In the context of Exodus, a role of Joseph is to provide the reasons of Exodus.
