“내가 페미니스트였어?” 그러니까 여성학은 계속되어야 한다 = “Am I a Feminist?” So, Women's Studies Should Go On...

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제도권 내 여성학과의 폐지 내지는 축소를 그 징표로 한국사회 여성학 위기가 진단되고 있는 가운데, 이 글은 대학생들의 여성학 수강경험에 대한 자료들을 그 근거로 여성학의 건재와 필요를 조심스럽게 타진해 보려는 글이다. 이미 양성평등 시대를 넘어 남성에 대한 역차별이 횡행하고 있다는 담론은 미디어와 인터넷을 중심으로 가속화되고 있고, 그에 따라 여성, 그리고 여성학에 대한 혐오와 폄훼 또한 심화되고 있다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 대학생들 역시, 불편함 혹은 의구심의 눈초리로 여성학에 다가오는 것을 망설이거나 주저하는 모습을 보인다. 하지만 막상 여성학 수업을 접하게 되면, 여성학이 제기하는 여러 문제들에 공감하게 되는 변화를 보이기도 한다. 특히 여학생들에게 여성학 수업은 치유와 회복의 공간으로서의 의미를 갖고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이런 점에서 이 글은 여성학 위기 담론 속에 매몰된 채, 미래 없는 페미니즘에 대해 한탄하는 대신, 여성학이 이룬 것과 이루고 있는 것들에 집중하고, 이를 확산하려는 노력을 통해 여성학의 성장과 지속을 전망하는 것이 필요함을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Given the atmosphere that the idea of reverse discrimination against men have gained popular acceptance especially in the internet community, a climate of ultra-misogyny and backlash towards feminism have been created. The abolishment or reduction of the women's studies class in higher education program has been also regarded as a signal for the crisis of women's studies in Korean society. This paper aims to shed lights on the ways in which women's studies has contributed to widening students' perspectives over current social issues and the lives of others in higher education. Although it is still true that many college students are predisposed to a prejudice against feminism before taking women's studies classes, it is observed that they have the opportunities to rethink “feminism” by sharing and understanding others' experiences through the class. Especially, it seems that, for female college students, women's studies class plays a crucial role in providing the space and environment for supporting and encouraging their needs and strengths. Rather than lamenting the crisis of women's studies, this paper suggests that it is significant to focus on what we've done and to expect the advancement and persistence of feminism in the future.
