Contemporary Chinese society is shaped by the intersection of rapid urbanization, class differentiation, the spread of consumer culture, and neoliberal discourses of self-management. Within this context, female-centered narratives can no longer be reduced to straightforward accounts of growth or self-realization. Women are represented as subjects who freely choose amid the compounded pressures surrounding marriage, childbirth, career, and family responsibility, while simultaneously being positioned as subjects required to perform specific gender norms; the Chinese urban drama 〈Nothing but Thirty〉, broadcast in 2020, offers a text that captures this condition in a concentrated form. This study examines, through an analysis combining postfeminist theory and structuralist narratology, how female subjects are interpellated and reconstructed in this drama, and how the postfeminist logic of choice and responsibility is reconfigured within the cultural conditions of Chinese society. To this end, an analytical framework integrating postfeminist theory, Althusser's concept of interpellation, and structuralist narratology was constructed: structuralist narratology was employed to examine narrative devices such as plot development, character relations, point-of-view construction, and scene arrangement, while postfeminist theory and the concept of interpellation were employed to interpret how female characters are called into particular identities and constituted through the logic of choice and self-management.
The analysis reveals that 〈Nothing but Thirty〉 does not reduce its female characters to the binary categories of oppressed victim or autonomous achiever; rather, the drama repeatedly constructs a structure in which women are interpellated as choosing subjects while the outcomes and responsibility for those choices are attributed to the individual. Although the female characters are placed in a range of choice situations concerning marriage, family, career, and consumption, the narrative emphasizes post-choice self-management and self-responsibility more than the structural conditions under which those choices are made, with the effect that gender inequality is reframed not as a matter of social structure but as a matter of individual capacity, attitude, and effort. The drama's everyday scenes do not treat gender norms as a mere backdrop but function as narrative devices that reveal how norms become naturalized through repetition and convention; within family relations, workplace life, friendships, and consumer culture, women are continually required to perform a particular femininity, a requirement reproduced through everyday practice and emotional labor. At the same time, the drama represents norms not as an absolute order but as a mutable construct subject to negotiation within relationships, thereby indicating the fluidity of gender order.

The drama further declines to resolve women's lives into a linear narrative of success and failure or advancement and reward; instead, it organizes its narrative around the continual renegotiation of the female characters' social positions and relational roles, figuring self-reconstruction not as a narrative of progress but as one of repositioning and readjustment. This narrative strategy reveals an ambivalent structure in which the freedom and autonomy promised by postfeminist discourse translate not into liberation but into an intensification of self-discipline and self-responsibility.
In sum, 〈Nothing but Thirty〉 is found not simply to adopt Western postfeminist discourse but to reconstruct it in combination with familial norms, national institutional conditions, and neoliberal discourses of self-management specific to Chinese society. By treating women's choices not as individual psychological decisions but as matters of subject position constituted within discursive and institutional conditions, this analysis demonstrates that media narratives function as significant cultural apparatuses that organize and reconfigure the meaning of gender order and female subjectivity. The study offers a framework for systematically accounting for the female narratives of Chinese OTT dramas from the perspective of postfeminism and interpellation, and contributes to expanding research on gender discourse in contemporary Chinese media. As this analysis is based on a textual reading of a single work, however, it is hoped that comparative research across female narratives from different periods and genres, together with audience-reception studies, will complement and extend the present discussion.
