M.C. 에셔의 원(圓), 신화와 대중문화 = The circle of M.C.Escher, myth and mass-culture

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 M.C. 에셔의 작품 분석을 통해 신화적 개념이 어떻게 대중문화로 재연되었는가를 살펴보려 한다. 네덜란드 출신의 그래픽 아티스트인 에셔는 보편적인 수학성을 자신의 작품에 내재시키기로 유명하다. 그러나 그의 작품들은 수학적인 면뿐만 아니라 인문학적인 면에서도 충분히 독해될 수 있는 것 같아 보인다. 그의 작품들 속에 신화적 원의 형태가 들어 있기 때문이다. 결국 그가 마음에 품었던 것은 비일상성과 일상성의 구도를 넘어섬이라고 해석될 수 있다. <상대성> 등 에셔의 여러 작품들은 계속 복제되어 대중문화형태로 시장에 등장하고 있다. 에셔의 작품들은 감상자의 관심을 쉽게 끌 수 있는 특이한 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 비일상성과 일상성의 경계를 넘고 있다는 면, 그리고 그것이 원으로 구성되어 있는 까닭에 감상자들로 하여금 영원과 무한, 그리고 재미를 느낄 수 있게 해준다. 그래서 대중문화의 소비자들은 에셔 특유의 이미지가 뿜어내는 쾌락과 유희와 심오함의 아우라를 각종 매체를 통해서 느낄 수 있게 되는 것이다. 이것이 에셔의 작품들 속에 대중적 친화성이 있다고 간주할 수 있게 해주는 가장 큰 이유다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to examine the representation of myth in mass-culture by analyzing M.C.Escher s works. Dutch graphic artist M.C.Escher is well-known for expressing mathematical concepts in his print works. However, in my view, his works can be read not only from the aspect of mathematics but also from the aspect of humanities. This is because there seems to be a certain kind of mythical circle in all his works. Through the mythical circle, he seems to represent something which transcends the common and the uncommon. Many of Escher s works including his <Relativity> have been reproduced in various forms in the mass-culture. It seems that his works have some special appeal to the consumers of mass-culture in the world. And one such appeal is the transcendent nature of his works that go beyond the common and the uncommon, which is expressed most notably by a pattern of mythical circle. This evokes ideas of eternity and infinity in the mind of the viewer, while also giving them a sense of fun. Viewers can feel both pleasure and the aura of mythical depths in many types of reproductions of Escher s images. This makes Escher a unique figure in modem art.
