This study extends Laban’s Effort theory to vocal performance and examines qualitative shifts in King George VI’s voice as portrayed by Colin Firth in The King’s Speech (2010). Originally devised to analyze bodily movement, Laban’s framework–Space, Weight, Time, and Flow–is here applied to the voice as a physiological action involving breath, phonation, resonance, and articulation.
Focusing on five pivotal scenes (the Wembley speech, the recording experiment, the swearing out burst, the “I have a voice” declaration, and the wartime broadcast), the analysis traces a progression from Bound to Free and ultimately Controlled Flow. Crucially, micro-shifts in Time, Weight, and Space map directly onto psychological transitions: the Wembley scene exhibits irregular timing and heavy/pressed phonation signaling anxiety; the swearing sequence shows a Quick–Strong–Direct con stellation that releases affect; and the final broadcast stabilizes into Sustained rhythm and me dium-to-strong resonance, embodying responsibility and resolve.
By treating voice as an integrated expression of body, affect, and psyche, this study provides a methodological tool for film acting analysis and articulates actionable body–voice training tasks for actor pedagogy.
