The major concern in reducing the total machining time of a sculptured surface is to reduce the machining time of the rough cutting process. The objective of this study is to develop the strategy of tool path generation and to find the optimal tool path pattern with the proper tool sizes in rough cutting operations. Three machining processes such as primary cutting, intermediate cutting and trim cutting are suggested and tool path patterns are developed for each process. Then, the methods to find the optimal tool path patterns with the proper tool sizes are developed to reduce the production time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulation study.
