플라톤 독해의 기본전제에 관한 재검토

국문 초록 (Abstract)

플라톤에 관한 전통적인 해석에 담겨 있는 몇 가지 문제점을 지적하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 전통적인 해석에서는 플라톤의 정치사상을 다음과 같이 압축한다. (1)개인이 가지는 개별적 의견을 초월하여 보편적으로 타당한 지식이 존재한다. (2) 그러한 지식만이 우리로 하여금 올바른 정치적 판단에 이르게 한다. 이에 대하여, 본고는 두 단계의 주장을 펼친다. 우선, 그런 식으로 파악되는 “올바른 정치적 판단”이 얼마나 옳은지는 차치하더라도, 그것이 그다지 “정치적”인 것으로 보이지 않는 점을 지적한다. 그런 연후에, 플라톤이 그토록 무리한 주장을 일방적으로 펼쳤다고 볼 수 없는 증거로서, 플라톤의 대화 중에서 몇 구절을 들어 해석한다. 이를 통하여, 플라톤 철학의 본질이 이치(logos)의 본질적인 내용을 우리에게 주입하는 데에 있기보다는 우리가 원하는 이치를 우리가 원하는 만큼 스스로 찾아가라는 데에 있다는 함축을 본고에서는 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper purports to bring into relief some difficulties inherent in the traditional way of reading Plato. Traditional reading delineates Plato's suggestions that: (1) there is a special kind of knowledge which is universally valid and transcendent of particular opinions and (2) only such knowledge will lead us to the correct political judgment. Against this view, this paper sets forth a two-dimensional argument. First, setting aside the question of how correct the "correct political judgment" so understood might be, it does not seem quite "political" at all. Then, I will bring into light some pieces of evidence from the text to demonstrate that Plato did not make such an untenable set of suggestions. By implication, I will try to establish that the gist of Platonic political philosophy is not so much intended to insinuate into us whatever substance of the logos as it is to recommend us to find the kind of logos that we want as much as we want.
