現實과 超越의 心靈主體 - 唐君毅의 人生哲學을 中心으로 - = The Formation of the Spiritual Subject in Tang Junyi’s Philosophy: Reality, Transcendence, and Moral Selfhood

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 唐君毅 인생철학의 핵심 개념인 ‘심령주체’에 주목하면서, 이를 단순한 존재론적 혹은 도덕 철학적 개념으로 다루는 기존 연구와는 다른 방향에서 접근한다. 지금까지의 연구들이 주로 도덕자아의 건립이나 심통구경(心通九境)에 나타난 구체 개념에 집중하여 唐君毅의 도덕 자아론 또는 경계 이론을 개별적으로 조명하는 데 그친 경향이 있다면, 본 논문은 ‘심령 주체’의 형성 과정을 현실과 초월이라는 양극 구조 안에서의 긴장과 극복, 회귀와 돌파의 사유 과정으로 파악하고, 이를 통해 唐君毅 철학의 전반적 사유 구조를 통합적으로 재구성한다. 특히 현실의 제약과 고통, 도덕 실천의 갈등, 초월적 감응의 가능성과 그 한계 등을 모두 포함 현실이면서 동시에 초월(亦現實亦超越)의 관점에서 심령 주체가 어떻게 자기 초월을 시도하고 실패하며, 다시 회귀하고 성장해 나가는지를 단계적으로 분석한다. 이로써 본 연구는 唐君毅의 철학이 단순한 이상주의가 아니라, 실존적 한계 안에서 구체적으로 전개되는 인간 정신의 성숙 서사임을 밝히고, 나아가 그의 철학을 현대적 자기 이해의 철학으로 재해석할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 이러한 통합적 접근은 기존의 개별 개념 중심 해석을 넘어선다는 점에서 차별적인 연구 의의를 지닌다.

This study focuses on the concept of the “spiritual subject” (心靈主體), a central element in the life philosophy of Tang Junyi (唐君毅), and approaches it from a perspective distinct from previous research that has largely confined itself to ontological or moral philosophical interpretations. While existing scholarship tends to isolate specific concepts—often analyzing Tang’s theory of the moral self or existential boundaries based on works such as The Establishment of the Moral Self (道德自我之建立) and The Nine Realms of the Heart (心通九境)—this paper seeks to reconstruct the formation of the spiritual subject as a dynamic process embedded within the polar structure of reality and transcendence. It interprets this formation not as a static ideal, but as an existential journey marked by tension and reconciliation, failure and renewal, within a perspective that is simultaneously immanent and transcendent (亦現實亦超越). By examining how the spiritual subject attempts and often fails at self-transcendence, yet continues to return and grow through the conflicts of moral practice and the limitations of transcendent resonance, the study highlights the existential and developmental nature of Tang’s thought. It thereby reveals his philosophy not as abstract idealism, but as a concrete narrative of spiritual maturation grounded in the human condition. Ultimately, this integrative approach provides a reinterpretation of Tang Junyi’s philosophy as a modern framework for self-understanding and contributes a distinctive methodological shift beyond concept-centered analysis toward a comprehensive reconstruction of his philosophical system.
