다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

In The Human Condition, Hannah Arendt articulates her conception of world alienation in the modern age. She considers action and work to be merely a means of labor that is not only necessary to cater to the biological needs of consumption and reproduction but also defined in terms of economic value. In the same sense, the value of life is exclusively viewed as the highest good. On this point, I argue, in this paper, that it is crucial to understand Arendt’s notion of world alienation in order to find alternative ways to heal such alienation in terms of narrative identity in the present age. Based on plurality in a common world, human speech and action form a web of human relationships in the public space, and its consequences, though unopredictable and irreversible, affect boundless human affairs. In other words, the unpredictable and irreversible nature of action results in the frailty of human affairs. In this respect, human beings tend to forsake the ability to act in the public sphere instead, they are inclined, governed by necessity and survival needs, to shun themselves in the private realm. Nonetheless, Arendt emphasizes that the potential of action is closely connected with natality and suggests a way to overcome world alienation. He suggests that storytelling empowers and individual to disclose oneself among others and establish selfidentity in the common world. To put it differently, action and speech can be transformed into narratives that provide a measure of truthfulness in the actions of individuals and also imply the promise that enables individuals to acknowledge their identity in the complicated web of human relationships. Consequently, in the paper based on the critical reading of The Human Condition, I discuss Arendt’s notion of narratives that have an inherent power to surmount the futility of basic animal life of living and, in doing so, to remedy world alienation. Through the narratives are derived from human action, individuals can disclose and maintain self-identities in the common, shared world.
