Runx2 transcription factor has been known as a master regulator for osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. Estrogen is another key regulator for bone growth, and maintenance of adult bone health. Although both Runx2 and estrogen pathway are important in bone homeostasis, the relationship between Runx2 and estrogen pathway genes in bone has not been clearly understood. Recently we found that Runx2 was expressed not only in skeletal tissues but also in nonskeletal estrogen responsive tissues including breast, brain, ovary and testis. These findings suggest that Runx2 transcription factor may have diverse effects on various tissues through estrogen pathway. In the presentation, I will summarize our recent studies aimed at understanding of relationship between Runx2 function and estrogen pathway.
