The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomena of hot-housing in Korea. Hot-housing means the process of inducing young children to learn knowledge that is typically acquired at a later developmental level. The hot-housing phenomena in this society have been accelerated and have provoked many problems in last 10 years. The subjects were 1203 children selected form 4 kindergartens, 2 elementary schools, and 2 junior high schools. The selections were based on the children`s age, living area, and sex. Parents of 1203 children responded to the questionnaire. Twenty children from each age group, yielding 140 children, were interviewed individually. Questionnaires for the parents and interviews for children were analyzed. The results were as the following : 1) Average of 76.9% of the subjects(92.3% of kindergarteners, 75.4% of elementary schoolers, and 65.5% of junior high school. exs) have experienced some forms of private lessons before entering school 2) Twenty types of early private lessons were found, and the age of starting early lessons has been changing for the past 10 years. 3) The age of starting early lessons has been getting younger and younger. 4) The average number of early lessons for one child has been increasing. 5) The parents` most popular reason for having their children early lessons was `helping children for their academic achievements`. 6) Although 56.9% of them favored early lesson itself, 94.1% of the parents indicated their discontentment with present hot-housing phenomena. 7) About starting age, 48% of the parents answered `too early`. About the namber of lessons, 80.7% auswered `too many. And about the cost, 81.3% answered `too much` . 8) Different from their parents, children did not show discontentment but wanted to have more time for early lessons(54.3% answered `it` s O.K.`, 22.4% answered `want some more time forit`).
