As the causes of juvenile delinquency from the family function perspective, the types of parental upbring, attachment between parents and children, children’s self-control, self-esteem, and self-efficacy have been examined. Role differences in parenting between mother and father might bring different influences on the juvenile delinquency. Recognizing the lack of research on this topic, the current study examined the effect of parents’self-control and parenting behavior on juvenile delinquency by separating their mother and father’s self control. Using the data from juvenile abuse and delinquency study conducted by the Korean Institute of Criminology in 2008, our research was able to get some significant conclusion based on the logistic regression analysis. First, the model contained mother’s self control showed that the student’misbehavior tends to be diminishing as they felt their mother has ability of self-control while the father’s self-control did not have relationship with delinquency of their children. Moreover, the effects of parent’s self-control were disappeared when the factors of parenting behavior (attachment to parents, supervision of parents, parents’emotional support) were added to both models. In perceived parenting behaviors, attachment to parent was significant factor to predict their children’s misbehavior. And emotional support was viable factor in only father’s model even though supervision of parent was not significant in both models. The aforementioned results indicate the difference of roles in the child rearing in Korea, and importance of holding in deep affection in their children.
