워즈워스의 회고 활동을 통한 비전 구축 = Wordsworthian Vision-Building through Retrospective Activities

국문 초록 (Abstract)

낭만주의를 이해하는데 있어서 워즈워스가 텍스트를 수정한다는 것이 어떠한 의미 차원에서 이해될 수 있는지 살펴보는 것은 흥미로운 작업이다. 그는 주체성의 문제를 『서곡』의 내용을 수정하는 작업을 통해 분명하게 보여준다. 그는 몇 차례 걸쳐서『서곡』의 내용을 수정하는데, 자신이 경험했던 실제 사실들을 있는 그대로 서술하는데 집중하기보다는 자기를 찾아가는 과정에 집중한 것으로 보인다. 그는 이 과정을 통해서 주체가 파편화되고 단절되는 것을 피할 수 있었다. 그는 자서전에서 실제로 어느 사건이 언제 일어났는지를 밝히며 글을 쓰고 있지만 그의 심리 이면에는 파편화되고 단절된 것을 인정하고 싶지 않은 마음이 자리 잡고 있었던 것으로 보인다.
그에게 있어서, 낭만주의 주체성의 문제는 자아와 외부 세계를 뚜렷하게 구분짓는 것과는 거리가 멀다. 오히려 그는 자아와 자아 사이의 문제에 더 치중하고 있다. 이 문제는 그가 여동생 도로시의 경험을 전유한다는 점에서도 명확하게 드러나고 있다. 그는 자신의 주변 인물들을 잘 활용하고 이야기에 변주와 변화, 확장을 가함으로써 이야기를 풍성하게 만든다. 이 과정에서 과거와 현재의 문제, 기억과 자아의 문제에 대해 깊이 고민한 흔적이 보인다. 그리고 과거의 감정을 기억해내는 능력만큼이나 새로운 감정들을 만들어 내고 있는 듯 보인다. 그는 단순한 연대기적 사건 나열 보다는 자신의 기억 행위를 통해 글의 연속성을 확보하기 위해 고민했던 작가였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In understanding Romanticism, it is a quite interesting project to look into why William Wordsworth revises several times his autobiographical poem, The Prelude. Remembering his past experience and modifying The Prelude are closely related to his retrospective activities. In this sense, his experience itself is no more than a text continuously revised by recalling his memory and unceasingly written by the present poetic composition, whose functions are related to his vision-building. Showing his vision-building process, The Prelude represents a text in which his reminiscence and imagination become materialized.
In the process of modifying the details he recollects, he concentrates his attention in figuring out and creating his self rather than narrating what he has experienced as it used to be. Romantic subjectivity for him, far from being clearly distinct between his self and the outer world, is focused upon the struggle between self and self. The process to accomplish his subjectivity represented in The Prelude enables him to avoid any fragmentation and discontinuation of his own self. Besides making good use of his acquaintances such as Dorothy and Coleridge, he has deep views of present, past, memory and self and endeavors to overcome any fragmentation and discontinuation. He enriches his story, adding variations and transcending temporality and reality by violating time orders in some degree.
