Three Metaphors of Leadership for Adult Education

The issue of leadership in the field of adult education has been discussed on the basis of general leadership theories, such as traits, behavior, contingency, transformational, and ethical leadership. Choi(2006), with a different perspective, provided comprehensive leadership and development frameworks considering the specific characteristics of adult educators and adult education institutions. In addition to his pioneering work, this paper aims to frame the concept of leadership for adult education by using three metaphors for leaders; 1) leader as opportunity taker, 2) leader as manager of present moment, and 3) leader as designer for systemic change. Required mental models for each type of leader were also provided. This article put specific emphasis on the ways that adult education leaders should deal with the complex problems caused by educational value conflicts, different needs from a variety of stakeholders, technological advances, unknown future demands, and so on. As a conclusion, it was indicated that a new perspective for adult education leadership is needed.
