교육과정 과목 편성에서의 균형과 선택 = Critical Review on the Idea of Balanced Development and Individualized Specialization in Deciding the Scope of School Curriculum

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 교육과정 편성의 맥락, 특히 학생들이 이수해야 하는 교과목의 종류와 범위를 결정하는 총론 편성의 맥락에서 종종 제기되는 선택과 필수 사이의 대립 문제를 각각의 관점에 전제되어 있는 교육적 인간상을 중심으로 검토하는 데 있다. 이 글에서는 ‘필수’와 ‘선택’의 대립에 전제된 교육적 인간상의 특징을 각각 ‘전인적 성장 및 균형적 발달’과 ‘개성 존중 및 전문능력 심화’로 규정하였다. 이렇게 볼 때 두 관점 사이의 대립은 ‘폭넓은 영역과 관련된 여러 가지 능력을 균형 있게 발전시켜 주는 것과 제한된 영역에 관한 능력을 집중적으로 길러주는 것 중 어느 것이 학습자의 발달에 도움을 줄 수 있는가’ 하는 질문으로 요약될 수 있다. 이 질문에 대한 대답은 개개인의 관점과 각 사회가 처해 있는 상황에 따라 차이가 있을 것이지만, 이 질문을 올바르게 다루기 위해서는 교육적 맥락에서 관심을 두어야 할 인간발달의 의미를 인간성의 관점에서 규정할 것인가 또는 능력의 측면이나 기능적 관점에서 규정할 것인가 하는 문제와 각각의 관점에 의해 규정된 인간발달을 도모하기 위한 구체적인 방법이 무엇인지의 문제, 그리고 선택 또는 필수로 지정하고자 하는 학습 영역을 어떻게 구분할 것인가 하는 문제 등이 분명하게 논의될 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine the underlying views on the characteristics of 'educated person' assumed by the ideas of the compulsory and the elective subjects in a context of deciding what scopes of subjects should be included in the school curriculum. I argue that those who argue for the compulsory subjects put more emphasis on the idea of 'whole person and balanced development' of students, whereas those who argue for the electives emphasize 'respect for individuality and specialization'. Viewed in this way, the issues emerging from the contests between the compulsory and the elective can be summarized in a question: which approaches among the one that promotes balanced development of broad realms of abilities and the one that pursues specialization in a more narrowly defined aspects of abilities does help students to develop as a properly educated person?
The answer to this question may vary according to one's value position and one's view on the nature of human being and the aims of education, etc. on the one hand, and according to the situation of each societies on the other. However, by clarifying the sub questions related to the one I identified above, we can deal with the question more properly and expect to reach at more comprehensible conclusions that can be understood by both sides. Those sub questions include among others: in what terms should we define the meaning of educational development of students―in terms of 'human nature' or in terms of abilities or functions that each student perform?; in what way and through which subjects can we promote the educational developments that we expect from the students?; and, how can we classify the areas of learning experiences that we seek for the balance or specialization?
