This research aims to suggest the direction of family policy that the current Korean government pursues as an attempt to respond to the changes in family system. In order to recommend the desirable direction of future family policy, this study examines the viewpoint of family, the object of family policy, the typology of family policy we need to pursue. It also evaluates the current system of Korean family policy by comparing with those in other countries, with reference to the delivery system. The finding suggests that the current family policy in Korea is characterized by such principles as `family protection first and state involvement later`, `selective provision of services`, and `passive involvement of the state in family welfare`. The policy suggestions this study would like to make are as follows; First, a consensus needs to be made regarding the goal(s) and boundary of family policy to set up its basic direction. This consists of the establishment of family friendly personal services, the implementation of system and services to carry out active family policy, the introduction of the policies which help achieve sexual equality and social responsibility for supporting the elderly, and the enactment of `basic law of family support` or the installation of `family policy committee` under president or prime minister. Second, `ministry of family welfare` needs to be set up as a principal institution that conducts a professional role in coordinating basic policies and delivering systemic services. It might be possible to give more priority to family policy so that the general direction of social policy is closely connected with family policy. Finally, for delivery system, it is required to establish `family support center` in local communities by which effective service provision can be made. There should be at least one center in the administrative units of city (Si), county (Gun), and council (Gu). It is also required each center develop a network system with the existing institutions such as community welfare or civil autonomy center which have been delivering family welfare services.
