This paper examines Du Bois's ideology of ‘racial uplift’ as revealed in The Philadelphia Negro and his intellectual transformation over time. In The Philadelphia Negro, Du Bois aims to bring the African-American upper class to the forefront by revealing that the black condition is a symptom rather than a cause. Although he revealed the existence of a African-American upper class by emphasising the class differences within blacks and their commitment to the black masses, he failed to achieve his goal by pointing out the moral decadence of the black masses. Du Bois's limitations were due to the influence of the “racial uplift” ideology that dominated African-American middle-class at the turn of the century. This was a conservative ideology that promoted the upward mobility of African-American rather than direct resistance to the increasing pressures of racism. Its adherents, the African-American middle class, deliberately separated themselves from the masses by adopting moral, cultural, and economic standards. However, it also served to uplift the elite by emphasising a spirit of service to the African-American underclass. However, seeing that American society remained unchanged by Washington's racial policies, Du Bois departed from his previous emphasis on wealth accumulation and economic independence by publishing The Souls of Black Folk and “The Talented Tenth”. However, Du Bois still echoed the core arguments of the racial uplift ideology.
