The light is a key element for recognizing the object. It makes the size, the shape and the location of an object to be recognizable. It also gives the three-dimensional effect and the depth of an object as well as the passing of time through the shadow. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the possibility of producing a Variable Figure shape using the shadow generated by the light. Chapters 1 and 2 introduces the background, purpose, and methodology of the present study as well as the physical attributes of light and shadow and Chapter 3 categorizes the previous works of formative shape using light and shadow. Chapters 4 and 5 studies the necessary principles and structures such as the shape, height, distance, and angel of the image slate used for producing shadow figures with natural and artificial light. The latter chapters further prove the possibility of producing a Variable Figure shape using the shadow by creating an actual work using the given principles and structures. Unlike previous works of the formative shape of shadows, this study investigates the physical properties of the light and the shadow and introduces actually produced works to confirm that it is possible to create a Variable Figure shape using the shadow. We expect that, by the conversion with other areas, the result of this study can be applicable in a wide-range of aspects.
