지리학적 행복 연구를 위한 시론 - 서울에 거주하는 청년층 및 노년층 심층 면담 결과를 사례로 - = A Spatial Engagement of Happiness: A Case Study on Youth and Elderly Residents in Seoul, South Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 질적 연구를 통해 계량화, 국가 간 비교에 치중된 기존 행복 논의의 한계를 비판하며 행복에 관한 지리학적 접근을 시도한다. 개인들이 삶의 과정에서 체득한 행복에 관한 인식, 경험, 대응 전략에 초점을 맞추어 그 안에서 드러나는 공간과 장소의 역할을 논의하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 역량 접근 및 공간적 역량 개념을 활용하였으며, 심층 면담의 결과를 1) 행복의 정의, 2) 행복 요인, 3) 행복 전략의 세 영역으로 나누어 분석하였다. 본 연구의 사례는 서울에 거주하는 청년층이나 노년층 각 9명, 총 18명의 심층 면담 결과이며, 이들은 행복과 관련된 담론 및 정책에서 문제시되는 두 연령 집단이라는 측면에서 연구참여자 선정의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구참여자들이 행복을 정의하는 방식은 선택할 수 있는 자유와 깊은 연관을 가진 것으로 나타났다. 청년층의 사례에서 이러한 연관이 보다 분명하게 드러나는 경향이 있었으나 노년층의 사례에서도 시대적 배경, 생애주기에 따라 개인이 갖게 되는 부담 등 간접적인 언급을 통해 행복과 자유의 연관성을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 행복 요인의 측면에서는 개인의 성취, 성과가 중요한 역할을 하고 있었으며, 이는 과도한 경쟁이 한국인들을 불행하게 한다는 통념과 배치되기 보다는 병존하고 있었다. 행복 전략의 측면에서는 가족 중심의 인간관계 및 주어진 상황에 대한 적응이 중요한 의미를 갖고 있었다. 둘째, 공간 및 장소는 개인의 삶과 경험을 맥락화/의미화하는 요소로써 행복을 구성하고 있었다. 이러한 측면에서 서울이라는 도시가 갖는 맥락 및 상징성이 중요한 역할을 하고 있었다. 청년층에서는 주거의 자유 및 개인적 성취로, 노년층에서는 행복의 매개로서 공간, 서울이 의미화되고 있었다. 본 연구는 거시적 담론, 수치화된 지표를 통해 드러나지 않는 개인의 행복의 다양한 지점들을 밝히고, 그 과정에서 공간이 의미화되는 방식에 주목함으로써 행복에 관한 지리학적 논의에 기여한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study endeavors to add onto the happiness debate that compares the happiness levels of different countries to quantify happiness. Using qualitative research methods, the research collects information on individuals’ perception, experience, and strategies of happiness that they have learned over the course of their lives. It then applies this information to a discussion of what roles space and place play in individuals’ happiness. Employing Sen’s capability approach and the concept of spatial capability as theoretical framework, the analysis of the fieldwork is divided in three categories: 1) definition of happiness, 2) happiness factors, and 3) happiness strategies. We conducted in-depth interviews with a total of 18 people living in Seoul. We concentrated on the young and elderly as these two age groups are considered problematic in discourse and policy related to happiness. The results of the study are as follows. First, the interview subjects were asked to define happiness. Many characterised happiness as the freedom to choose for themselves, particularly in deciding their residence and mobility especially in relation to living in Seoul. Second, interview subjects were invited to identify those factors as an important part of their happiness. Most regarded individual achievements as an important factor to their happiness and considered living in Seoul as an indicator of their achievement. Conversely, many deemed excessive competition as a factor in impeding happiness. Third, the interview subjects were asked to describe their happiness strategies. Many cited family-oriented relationships and adaptation to a given situation as happiness strategies, adding that space and place were valuable tools in the development of their happiness strategies. In studying individual happiness and paying attention to the way space gains meaning in the process, this study contributes to the geographical discussion of happiness that has been overlooked by the macrodiscourse and quantitative indicators.
