This study examines whether the phenomenon of mediatization, which has been primarily discussed in the field of political communication, can be applied to CEOs in corporate crisis situations. Specifically, by analyzing whether stock price volatility is alleviated as the frequency of CEO media exposure increases during crisis phases, this study investigated how CEO media exposure influences market uncertainty. To this end, long-term time-series data were constructed using The New York Times articles covering crisis events involving S&P 500 listed companies over the past 30 years, and both time-series analysis and dynamic panel regression analysis were conducted. In addition, to examine whether these effects vary according to the structural characteristics of industries, the analytical sample was classified into traditional manufacturing industries and technology, media, and communication (TMT) industries. The results showed that stock price volatility during crisis situations exhibits persistence over time, and that CEO media coverage increases significantly in crisis periods compared to non-crisis periods. Moreover, increased CEO media exposure during crises was associated with a reduction in stock price volatility, suggesting a buffering effect on market uncertainty. While this effect appeared relatively stronger in the TMT industry, industry-level differences were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that CEO media exposure in corporate crisis situations can operate as a communication mechanism influencing market uncertainty, and they extend the concept of mediatization to the contexts of corporate crisis communication and financial markets.
