This study examines the association between international diversification and cost stickiness using 2,524 firm-year observations of non-financial firms listed on the KOSPI market from 2011 to 2025. International diversification is measured by the foreign assets ratio (FAS) and the foreign sales ratio (FSL). Cost stickiness is measured using a firm-year STICKY variable adapted from Weiss (2010), with a lower value indicating greater cost stickiness. To examine whether the effects of international diversification changed after COVID-19, the regression models include interaction terms between each diversification measure and POSTCOVID, which equals one for the 2020–2025 period and zero otherwise.
The results show that, before COVID-19, firms with higher foreign asset ratios exhibited significantly greater cost stickiness, suggesting that overseas facilities, subsidiaries, and logistics networks make it difficult to adjust costs when sales decline. However, there is no evidence that the effect of foreign assets changed significantly after COVID-19. A higher foreign sales ratio was associated with lower cost stickiness before COVID-19. This study shows that the effect of international diversification on cost behavior differs by measurement type and that post-COVID changes are not statistically significant.
