Comparative enamel dissolving ability of organic acids and the effect of fluoride on the dissolution rate were investigated with powdered enamel. Enamel was dissolved in 0.1 M lactate, acetate and propionate buffer (pH 4.0) for 15 minutes at 37°C with mechanical shaking and then Ca, P concentrations in buffers were determined. And effect of fluoride on acid dissolution was studied employing pretreated enamel at 100 ppm for 15 minutes and at 5 ppm for 30 days. All experiments were triplicated. Among the acid buffers, enamel dissolution rate of lactate was greatest and then acetate and propionate was least. Fluoride pretreatments inhibited dissolution rate in all acid buffers. And rates of Ca and P-dissolution inhibition were similar in 100ppm-F-15 minute pretreated enamel, but in case of 5 ppm F-30 day pretreatment, inhibition rate of P-dissolution was markedly increased while Ca-dissolution inhibition rate was slightly decreased than those of 100 ppm F-15 minute pretreatment presumably due to difference in CaF₂ formation.
