아로마 림파틱 트리사지 프로그램이 탁센계열 항암치료를 받는 유방암 환자의 하지부종 및 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 = Effects of Aroma Lymphatic Tressage on Lower Extremity Edema by Taxanebased Chemotherapy and Quality of Life in Patients with Breast Cancer

Purpose: This study was designed to verify the efficacy of Aroma Lymphatic Tressage program for the relief of lower extremity edema induced by taxane-based chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer.
Methods: This study was conducted on a total of 37 breast cancer patients who visited the cancer center of A Hospital in K University and experienced moderate (Grade 2) or higher lower extremity edema by taxane-based chemotherapy. Aroma Lymphatic Tressage was performed for 40 minute twice a week for 4 weeks (8 sessions). Each session was conducted by therapists (3 people) who completed the Oncology Aesthetic course, using the aromatic oil blending cedarwood and lemon essential oils with a sweet almond oil base. Changes in the minimum circumference of the thigh, calf, and lower leg were measured before the intervention, after applying the intervention for 2 weeks, after the final intervention, and 2 weeks after the end of the intervention (4 times). Quality of life was evaluated at the same time points using the EORTC-QLQ-C30 questionnaire and FACT-TAXANE.
Results: There was a significant decrease (p< .001) in lower extremity edema of the thighs, calves, and lower legs. Both EORTC-QLQ-C30 questionnaire and the FACT-TAXANE questionnaire showed significant (p<.001) improvement before and after intervention. There was no significant difference between the FACT-TAXANE social and family situation scores.
Conclusion: Aroma Lymphatic Tressage program was effective in relieving lower extremity edema inducded by taxane-based chemotherapy and improving the quality of life in patients with breast cancer. Based on the results, this study showed the feasibility of Aroma Lymphatic Tressage as a complementary intervention to improve edema in the lower extremities after taxane-based chemotherap and quality of life in patients with breast cancer.
