종묘제례악장(宗廟祭禮樂章) 〈보태평(保太平)〉,정대업(定大業)의 특성과 변모 양상 = Characteristics and Variation Aspect of Jongmyojeryeakjang, Botaepyeong(保太平) and Jeongdaeeop(定大業)

Due to its complexity and extensiveness of Yongbieocheon-ga(Songs of Flying Dragons Through Heavens, 龍飛御天歌), the implications had not been conveyed thoroughly. For that reason, Sejong produced Botaepyeong(保太平) and Jeongdaeeop(定大業) in the attempt to relocate the content of Yongbieocheon-ga in conformity with the area of `civil virtues(文)` and `military forces(武)`. Although most part of Botaepyeong and Jeongdaeeop originated from Yongbieocheon-ga, differences existed in two aspects: `Emphasis on Taejong`; `Emphasis on the Image of Military Heroism`. In regards to the second aspect, Sejong, particularly, emphasized Jeongdaeeop between the two. That is, the aspect of military forces was keenly articulated among the various accomplishments of the preceding kings. The conflict between the sovereign and the subjects arose as to what was the motivation to establish Joseon Dynasty. The subjects emphasized the active reformation activity of Sinjinsadaebu(新進士大夫) and their introduction of Sung Confucianism; on the other hand, Sejong, especially, emphasized the accomplishments and the leadership of the preceding kings that had defeated the attacks from other races(Honggeonjeok(紅巾賊) and Japanese pirates(倭寇)). Therefore, the order of importance had been determined as a form of emphasizing the image of military heroism of the preceding kings-a form that Jeongdaeeop was given prominence to Botaepyeong. However, as Botaepyeong and Jeongdaeeop were used as lyrics on the Jongmyojeryeak(宗廟祭禮樂) in the Sejo period, the variation of contents reappeared. The remaking remained the system of Botaepyeong as it was; whereas, Jeongdaeeop had gone through drastic reduction. The establishment of royal authority in the Sejo period was one of the reasons for these changes. In the Sejo period where the royal authority already overpowered the authority of subjects, the political situation was settled to the extent that Sejo himself preferred the image of sovereign with the harmony of civil virtues and military forces. Therefore, the contents and hierarchy of Botaepyeong and Jeongdaeeop were readjusted to create a balance in both areas of civil virtues and military forces. Especially, these variations were inevitable in Botaepyeong and Jeongdaeeop to be used as lyrics on both Jongmyojeryeak and ceremonial music.
