The aim of this study is to make clear the Sofa(Bang, Jung-Whan: 1898-1931)`s understandng on child and to discuss his educational thoushts. The conclusins of this study is as follows. Sofa was the pioneer of child liberation movement who popularized the new term `urini`(the pure koren word which means child) in the age of domination of Japanese Imperialism. His viewpoints on child has four phases. First, child is intrinsically a natural being who as truth, goodness and beauty. Second, child is our hope as a creative being. Thirdly, child in that time was treated contemptuously and dominated by both adults and Japanese Imperilaism. Fourth, joyfulness is essential to child`s development. Happiness of free activity should be given to him. Sofa`s principles of child education are summarized as to the principle of growth and autonomy. They lie the extreme opposite of korean traditional adult-centered educational view. Critically speaking, his principle of growth neglected the interaction of child and adult. Also, his principle of autonomy neglected the public value of educational content. Though Sofa`s view on child is not balanced, it is helpful for overcoming the unequal and irretional adultcenteredness.
