아시아 민주주의의 질: 지표의 구축전략과 과제 = A Task and Constructing Strategy for the Quality of Asian Democracy Index

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 아시아 국가의 민주주의 질을 비교할 수 있는 동일지표 및 등가지표를 구축하기 위한 전략을 모색하고 그에 기초한 지표를 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 이전의 민주주의 질 연구는 개념 정립의 문제와 측정지표의 등가성과 타당성에 한계가 있다. 본 연구는 개념정립의 오류를 줄이기 위해 개념의 내포성(connotation)과 외연성(denotation)이 균형을 갖는 중간범위개념(middle range concept)의 중요성을 강조한다. 그리고 아시아 민주주의 질 지표의 구축을 위한 과정을 다음과 같이 제시한다. 첫째, 민주주의 질에 대한 이론적 정의; 둘째, 각국가의 역사적 문화적 지역적 특성에 따른 민주주의 질의 속성 도출및 분류; 셋째, 민주주의 질의 속성 정의(맥락정의); 넷째, 객관적 지표와 주관적 지표 구축; 다섯째, 지표의 기준타당성 및 구성타당성 검증을 제시하였다. 민주주의 질을 비교하기 위해서는 역내에서 적용가능한 체계적 개념화의 구성과 등가성, 타당성 그리고 맥락적 고유성을 갖는 지표의 구축이 중요하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to suggest a strategy for constructing equivalent measures of the quality of democracy in Asia. Previous researches about the quality of democracy have problem on the concept misformation, the equivalence and the validity of measurement. This article emphasizes the importance of a middle range concept that is the balance between connotation and denotation of concept for the decreasing concept misformation. A five-step methodological strategy has been suggested to construct an index of democratic quality in Asian: (1) the theoretical definition of democratic quality; (2) to find and to classify the attributes of democratic quality with the specific character of each country; (3) the context definition of democratic quality; (4) the construction of objective indicators and subjective indicators; (5) the verification of construct validity and criterion validity of indicators. To compare with the quality of democracy, it is important to formulate a systematized concept and to establish a usable measurement equivalence, validity, and contextual specificity in intra-region.
