세계지식경쟁력지수를 활용한 한국의 지역지식 경쟁력지수 측정에 관한 연구 = A Study on Measurement of Regional Knowledge Competitiveness Index in Korea: Using World Knowledge Competitiveness Index

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 세계지식경쟁력지수(WKCI)에 기초하여 개발된 지역지식경쟁력지수(RKCI)를 통해 상대적인 지역지식경쟁력을 평가하고 지역지식경쟁력지수(RKCI)의 유용성을 고찰하고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 지역경제에 있어 지역지식경쟁력지수 (RKCI)은 공간적인 불균형을 RKCI의 하부지표별로 살펴보았고, 특히 지식경쟁력이 수도권에 집중되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 2007년 지역지식경쟁력지수와 일인당 GRDP사이에는 0.127의 약한 상관관계를 갖고 종속변수에 대한 통계적 설명력도 상대적으로 낮은 반면 일인당 소비지출과는 0.794의 강한 상관관계를 갖고 통계적 설명력도 높은 것으로 나타냈다. 마지막으로, RKCI의 하부지표들은 지역경제력지수(REPI)와 지역혁신지수(RII)에 대한 설명력이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

This paper proposes the Regional Knowledge Competitiveness Index (RKCI) adopted as the model of regional knowledge?based production by Huggins and Izushi (2009) to measure the knowledge competitiveness of regions in Korea. Also, the paper assesses the relative economic competitiveness of regions in Korea by constructing a single composite index that reflects, as fully as possible, the measurable criteria constituting regional competitiveness and analyzes the relationship between each dependent variable[Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) per capital and consumption expenditure per capita] and the RKCI in Korea. We find that regional knowledge competitiveness shows a spatial disparity in development capacity and the RKCI allows regions to compare their knowledge competitiveness with other regions. The Seoul metropolitan area (Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi) demonstrates the significant concentration of knowledge competitiveness in Korea. This paper also shows that the correlation coefficient between the RKCI and GRDP per capita is only 0.127 in 2007, a decidedly weak correlation. However, the correlation coefficient between RKCI and consumption expenditure per capita is actually 0.794, showing strong correlation. Hence, it is clear that the majority of the high performing regional consumption has knowledge competitiveness in Korea. Finally the RKCI is compared validation in terms of its relationship to the Regional Economic Power Index (REPI) and the Regional Innovation Index (RII). The correlation coefficient between the RKCI and the REPI is only 0.925 in 2007, a decidedly strong correlation. The RKCI also is strongly correlated with RII.
