구스타프 말러의《대지의 노래》 연구 : 시의 해석과 음악 분석을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911)의《대지의 노래》(Das Lied von der Erde)는 중국의 당(唐)시 속 동양적 시상을 서양 음악적 요소와의 결합을 통해 표현하여 낸 작품이다. 이 작품을 구성하는 여섯 곡은 가사를 통해 유기적 연결성을 갖는 점에서 연가곡의 특징을 가지고 있으며 교향곡의 형식으로 작곡되어 후기 낭만 시대의 형식적·장르적 융합을 이룬 독특한 작품으로 여겨진다. 《대지의 노래》는 말러가 삶의 고난들로 인해 육체적·심리적 고통 중에 있을 때 우연히 접하게 된 한스 베트게(Hans Bethge, 1876-1946)의 번안 시《중국의 피리》(Die chinesische Flöte)에서 영감을 얻게 되어 작곡하게 되었다. 당시 많은 서양 음악가들은 교역의 발달로 유입된 이국적인 동양음악에 대해 높은 관심이 있었고 이러한 시대적 배경과 함께 이 작품에서도 여러 동양적 요소들과 음악적 특징을 서양적 기법들과 함께 사용한 것을 엿볼 수 있다.
본 논문은 말러가 활동했던 후기 낭만주의 시대의 시대적 배경과 함께 작곡가 말러의 생애와 그의 작품 경향에 관해 서술한다. 또한 그의 작품 《대지의 노래》에 사용된 중국의 원작 시(詩)들의 원문과 시상(詩想)에 관해 연구한다. 특히 말러가 가사로 삼은 베트게의 번안 시는 중국의 시를 번역하는 과정에서 동양의 시문학에서 나타나는 함축적 시상과 시어들이 상당 부분 서술적이고 사실적으로 표현되었기 때문에, 원작 시에 관한 연구는 작품을 폭넓게 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 다음으로 작품 분석에 있어서, 번안된 시를 가사로 사용하는 과정에서 말러의 주관적 해석을 통한 시어의 반복과 추가된 구절들을 연구하고, 원작 시의 함축적 시상들과 비교한다. 또한 작품 속에 사용된 여러 동양 음악적 요소들과 말러의 서양 음악적 작법을 분석한다.
따라서 본 논문을 통해 말러의《대지의 노래》가 가지는 음악사적 가치들을 살펴보고, 작품 속에 쓰인 다양한 동서양의 문학적·음악적 요소들을 분석함으로써 작품을 다양한 측면에서 감상할 수 있는 지표를 제공함과 동시에 연주자들이 이 작품을 더욱 쉽게 이해하고 해석하는 데 있어 실질적이면서도 실용적인 도움을 주는 자료로 활용될 수 있다는 것에 그 의의가 있다고 하겠다.

Gustav Mahler's 'Das Lied von der Erde' is a unique musical composition that intricately weaves Chinese Tang poetry and Western musical elements. Comprising six interconnected songs, this work forms a distinctive song cycle with organic connections between pieces. The whole concept works out in one theme, which this song tells about. It is like a symphonic Lieder.
Mahler found inspiration in Hans Bethge's adapted poem 'Die chinesische Flöte' during a tumultuous period in his life, leading to a composition that skillfully integrates various Eastern elements with Western techniques. This paper delves into Mahler's life, artistic trends, and the historical context of the late Romantic period, focusing on the original Chinese poem that influenced 'The Song of the Earth.'
Emphasizing the interpretative aspect of poetry, the study examines Mahler's translation process and his use of Bethge's adapted poem as lyrics. It scrutinizes how Mahler's subjective interpretation introduces repetition of poetic language and added phrases, comparing these with the implicit poetics of the original Chinese poem.
Furthermore, the thesis evaluates Mahler's 'The Song of the Earth' musical-historical value by analyzing the distinctive literary and musical characteristics of Eastern and Western traditions. Serving as a guide, it offers a nuanced understanding of the work, particularly in its poetic interpretation, and provides practical insights for performers seeking a more efficient grasp of the piece.
