17세기 중반 유럽 국제관계의 변화에 관한 연구

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to offer a new interpretation of the changes European international relations underwent in the mid-seventeenth century. Recently, the long-held view that the modern international relations based on the principle of sovereignty was born with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 has been successfully refuted. This paper claims that a set of significant changes, if not the birth of sovereign state system, took place in European international relations around 1648. To understand these changes, we first need to know that the European seventeenthcentury was the period of fundamental crises. We also need to know that serious efforts were made to cope with these crises, which we might call ‘struggle for stability.’ As a result of these efforts, the problem of chronic instabilities in ‘composite states’ was partly solved. At the international level, the importance of religion as a factor to be considered in inter-state relations was diminished, while domestic-international divide was made far more apparent than before. This we can recognize in the changed character of foreign policies of France during the reign of Louis XIV.
