Traditional play songs that were created from life experiences of the ancestors help growth of infants and young children. They contain traditional emotion of our people. Only the traditional play songs with strong and sticky life have been transmitted by word of mouth up to now. However, the succession of traditional play songs was dimmed because of remarkable development of material civilization.
As new things can be created only when they know old things, traditional play songs should be inherited and developed as our peoples play. Therefore if parents sing the traditional play songs, they can give our tradition and peoples emotion to infants and young children for their physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development.
In this study, Dandongchigi Siphunchi transmitted from Dangun era was investigated and the characteristics of traditional play songs in infant period that have been transmitted up to now were identified. The application of the Yin and Yang and the five elements, meridians and the flow of energy in hands and feet were described in tables and pictures to help understanding. The impacts of the play songs and play methods on human bodies of the infants were reanalyzed focusing on the five elements and meridians in the perspective of the oriental medicine.
Following characteristics are differences between infant traditional play songs and child traditional plays.
First, the purpose of the infant traditional play songs is to train senses and movement functions.
Second, infant traditional play songs are adult-driven plays.
Third, infant traditional play songs repeat simple vocabulary and melody.
Fourth, infant traditional plays are indoor plays.
Fifth, there is no need of special play tools for infant traditional plays, and infants can be enjoyed regardless of their gender.
The analysis results in the perspective of oriental medicine are as follows;
First, investigating the songs in the perspective of the physical development of infants, traditional play songs are composed with play movements allowing whole body exercise including neck exercise, eye-hand coordination and the development of small muscles in hands and legs. Through play gestures, they can improve health by stimulating five viscera and six entrails and various meridians including Governor Vessel, Conception Vessel, and Yongchon acupoint.
Second, investigation the songs in the perspective of the emotional development of infants, they compose good attachment through interactions with parents. The warm play song melodies heard on mothers back and in mothers breast give infants comfort as if they were in their mothers womb.
Therefore the fact that the traditional play songs are very important to physical and emotional development of infants and the necessity of active utilization should be notified so that they can be provided to more infants.
