      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Propranolol, one of the beta adrenergic blocking •agents, has been used for the treatment of several
cardiovascular disorders. Recently a few clinical investigators have reported that this drug can be
used as an antianxiety agent. Some central mechanisms of action has been suggested to explain the
beneficial effects of propranolol in various anxiety states, but other authors reported that peripheral
block of symptoms such as palpitation and tremor, which tend to sustain the condition by a positive
feedback, appears to be most likely mechanism.
It has been recently reported that many psychotropic drugs including chlorpromazine, lithium
and some benzodiazepine antianxiety drugs, potentiated the alcohol effects or elevated the blood
alcohol level in experimental animals. In view of these findings, the author conducted an animal
experiment to investigate the effects of propranolol on blood alcohol in rabbits.
      Results and Conclusion
      1. Propranolol in a dose of 20mg/kg of body weight for 5 or 10 days, lowered significantly
the blood alcohol level in rabbits at both 15 and 45 minutes after alcohol administration.
      2. Propranolol in a dose of 40mg/kg of body weight for 5 or 10 days, lowered significantly
the blood alcohol level in rabbits at both 15 and 45 minutes after alcohol level administration.
      3. Propranolol in a dose of 60mg/kg of body weight for 5 days caused no signicicant change in
the blood alcohol level at 15 minutes after alcohol administration, but elevated significantly
the blood alcohol level at 45 minutes. Propranolol in a *same dose for 10 days elevated
significantly the blood alcohol level at both 15 and 45 minutes after alcohol administration.
