The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the decision-making of the elderly within the family and their own resources. A questionnaire was developed and data was collected through individual interviews with 330 elderly women living with their married child in Seoul. The data was then analyzed by various statistical methods such as Frequency, Percentile, ANOVA, F-test, Pearson`s Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis, etc. The results of this research are as follows. First, decision-making patterns and participation levels in decision-making process among the elderly had significant differences according to personal resources, family environmental resources, and psychological resources. Second, psychological resources of the elderly demonstrated significant differences according to personal resources and family environmental resources. Third, among all resources affecting decision-making patterns of the elderly, self-esteem had the highest effect and the next were cost of living source, home ownership, the elderly`s age in order. In regards to the participation levels in decision-making process, the most influential resource was the elderly`s age and the next were self-esteem, home ownership, housewife`s employment status in order. Throughout the results of this study, we can see that various resources, economic resources, in particular, have a significant influence upon the decision-making patterns and participation levels in decision-making process among the elderly. Also, these results support Resource Theory that power lies in the comparative resources of each individual and imply that a combination of personal effort and social policy is necessary for economic independence in old age.
