This paper looks at the third party candidate phenomena and electoral coalition buildings since the democratization in Korea as the political outcome of dynamic relationship among cleavage structure, electoral system, and strategical reactions of major political actors. The first examines the third party candidate phenomena. While plurality rule wields centripetal force, making two party system, defying agasint it, the regional cleavage in Korea has produced multiparty tendency. And the third party candidates have emerged on the one hand through the schism of regional ruling coalitions, and on the other hand through the good use of emerging new cleavage structure. Second, the presence of regionalism, the plurality rule, and third party candidate tends to entice the formation of electoral coalition. And it has been done in Korea, either through building the anti-ruling regional band, or candidate unification between the third party candidate and the major party one.
