Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore changes in international outdoor recreation research keywords over time and to identify core keywords and keyword clusters across time periods. Method This study collected bibliographic data for 146 papers on the topic of "outdoor recreation" from the WoS website. Data were analyzed using NetMiner, utilizing degree centrality and cohesive group analysis techniques. Results First, there were distinctive differences in keywords in international outdoor recreation research over time. Second, core keywords in international outdoor recreation research from 1995 to 2024 included "recreation," "area," "activity," "use," and "information." Third, international outdoor recreation topics included "natural environment and health," "policy and ecological systems," "activity and tourism environment," and "management and planning." Conclusion The field of international outdoor recreation research has conducted diverse research tailored to societal trends over time, and keyword network analysis is an appropriate analytical method for elucidating this phenomenon.
